The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a multi-billion-pound project transforming rail travel across the Pennines. The engineering work to tracks and stations across the North will bring passengers more frequent trains that run on a cleaner, more reliable railway.
Funded by the Department of Transport and delivered by Network Rail, many organisations are working together to launch TRU. We work closely with the TRU team to help improve the performance, reliability, and sustainability of our line and minimise disruption to customers.
The line between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York will be fully electrified for passenger trains. This will reduce our carbon footprint and improve air quality by removing up to 87,000 tonnes of CO2 per year- the equivalent of just under 6 million car journeys.
Upgrading and remodelling tracks will mean faster and more dependable journeys, with more trains to choose from. Many stations along the line are also getting an upgrade, including improved accessibility, longer platforms to accommodate longer trains and a better station environment for our customers. Find out more about TRU.
Due to the huge scale of the improvement work, TRU will result in some planned disruption across our network. Alternative rail routes have been organised to keep passengers moving by trains during this time and we will work with all TRU’s partners to minimise disruption to customers though on some occasions a replacement bus service will be necessary. Find out more about upcoming TRU work.
