In delivering our service to the North and Scotland, we ensure that we take steps that deliver value. This approach is termed our Social Value. Social Value considers the economic, social and environmental benefits that an organisation has on its surroundings.
At TransPennine Express we’re committed to generating as many positive benefits as we possibly can on our communities, our environment, and our people. A really big part of making this is happen is a focus on sustainability.
Like every business, we need to be sustainable, for the benefit of our region, passengers and our business and meeting that need is important to us, so much so that we have a team with TransPennine Express who are dedicated to it.
As part of our commitment to improving our social value we will produce an annual Social Value report. Using the Rail Industry Social Value Tool we will measure the value our activities provide against a range of performance indicators. Using these indicators will also allow us to continually challenge ourselves to deliver more value from the decisions we take.
Once our first Social Value report is published, you’ll be able to find it here on this page.
Social sustainability is one of the three pillars of sustainability, and it is one of the areas where we’re most proud of what we’re doing. We try to positively impact the society around us at all levels of our business, starting with the charity work and volunteering work we participate in to contribute to supporting the community. Alongside this we aim to inspire and coach the next generation through our outreach and support into schools, and links we’re building with the Princes Trust. On top of this, where we can, we use suppliers from around our region, from the upholstery on our seats to the food on our catering trollies. Our teams represent a cross section of the communities we serve and we’re proud of what we do to be an inclusive employer of a diverse workforce.
In addition, we are training more people to be our future train drivers and we offer opportunities to young people through a number of annual apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.
Protecting our environment is a key component of approach to sustainability, and decarbonisation is an enormous part of our strategy for the next few years. It’s so key, we even have a page dedicated entirely to it. To find out more about what we’re doing in our journey please take a look here.
For us to be a sustainable business, we need to be available to anybody and everybody who wants to travel with us. To help facilitate social mobility we need to remain as accessible as possible, closing the gaps in ease of use, and allowing people with any type of visible and non-visible accessibility need to travel with us with the minimum of effort.
