Engineering work will be taking place on certain routes on and around the TransPennine Express network through Spring, including over Easter and on the May Bank Holiday weekends.
Those train services that are running are expected to be busier than usual, and anyone planning to travel should allow extra time when making their journey.
Customers are advised to plan ahead and check before they travel using National Rail Enquiries or JourneyCheck.
A summary of service alterations over this period will follow. For information about all engineering work taking place, see here.
Buses will replace trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport.
TransPennine Express services between Manchester and Sheffield will divert and not call at Stockport.
Customers will need to change at Manchester Piccadilly for onward connections towards Stockport and Liverpool.
TransPennine Express will also run a shuttle service between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street (Saturday and Monday Only)
Services on Sunday between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street will start/terminate at Warrington Central due to separate engineering work.
Network Rail is carrying out major improvement works between Huddersfield and Dewsbury from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 April included as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade.
Train services will be diverted and running to an amended timetable and some parts of your journey might involve bus replacement services, meaning journey time may be extended. Further details on the changes to services can be found below.
RAIL SERVICES
Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester – Huddersfield – Leeds – Newcastle
Saturday 19 and Monday 21 April only: This service will be running between Leeds and Newcastle only on an amended timetable.
Train services will also be running between Liverpool Lime Street and Huddersfield and replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Leeds and Huddersfield for onward travel to and from Manchester and Liverpool (see details below, “Bus services”).
Sunday 20 April only:
This service will be running between Leeds and Newcastle only on an amended timetable.
A TransPennine Express train service will be running in both directions between Manchester Victoria and Huddersfield, calling at Stalybridge only.
Replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Manchester Victoria – Liverpool calling at Newton-le-Willow and Lea Green, as well as between Leeds – Huddersfield for onward travel (see details below, “Bus services”).
Manchester Airport – Huddersfield – Dewsbury – Redcar Central
This service will be running between Dewsbury and Redcar Central only on an amended timetable. It will be calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley in both directions. Replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Dewsbury and Huddersfield for onward travel to and from Manchester (see details below, “Bus Services”).
Liverpool Lime Street – Manchester – Huddersfield – Dewsbury – Hull
Saturday 19 April: This service will be split in two and will be running between Liverpool – Huddersfield and between Dewsbury - Hull only on an amended timetable. The Liverpool leg of the service will be calling additionally at Lea Green and the Hull leg of the service will be calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley.
Replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Dewsbury and Huddersfield for onward travel (see details below, “Bus Services”).
Sunday 20 April: This service will be affected by additional non-TRU engineering work between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria.
This service will be split in two and will be running between Manchester Victoria – Huddersfield and Dewsbury - Hull only on an amended timetable. The Manchester Victoria leg of the service will be calling at Stalybridge only and the Hull leg of the service will be calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley.
Replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street and between Dewsbury – Huddersfield for onward travel (see details below, “Bus Services”).
Monday 21 April: This service will be split in two and will be running between Liverpool – Huddersfield and between Dewsbury - Hull only on an amended timetable. The Liverpool leg of the service will be calling additionally at Lea Green and the Hull leg of the service will be calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley.
Replacement bus services will be running in both directions between Dewsbury and Huddersfield for onward travel (see details below, “Bus Services”).
Manchester Victoria – Scarborough
This service will only run between York and Scarborough. Change at York for onward travel.
Leeds – Huddersfield (local stopping, every two hours)
This service will not run.
The Hull – Dewsbury and Redcar Central – Dewsbury train services will be calling additionally at Batley, Morley and Cottingley for the duration of the engineering work.
Replacement bus services will be available between Huddersfield and Dewsbury calling at Deighton, Mirfield and Ravensthorpe (see details below, “Bus Services”).
Manchester Piccadilly – Huddersfield – Wakefield Kirkgate – York
This service will be split and run on an amended timetable between Manchester - Huddersfield (hourly), along with Wakefield Kirkgate - York via Castleford (hourly).
Replacement bus services will be available for travel between Huddersfield and Wakefield Kirkgate, calling at Deighton, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury (see details below, “Bus Services”).
ADDITIONAL TRAIN SERVICES:
To support Northern in strengthening services between Leeds – York during this engineering possession, TransPennine Express will be running the following additional service in place of Northern.
Leeds – York (local stopping)
TransPennine Express will be operating the local stopping service between Leeds and York. It will be calling at Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield.
BUS SERVICES
Huddersfield – Leeds
A bus replacement will be running express in both directions between Huddersfield and Leeds up to every 30 minutes. Estimated total journey time: 50 minutes.
Huddersfield – Dewsbury
A bus replacement will be running express in both directions between Huddersfield and Dewsbury hourly. Estimated total journey time: 35 minutes.
Huddersfield – Brighouse – Halifax (Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April only)
A bus replacement service will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 25 minutes.
Huddersfield – Manchester Airport
A bus replacement will be running express in both directions between Huddersfield and Manchester Airport hourly. Estimated total journey time: 65 minutes.
Huddersfield – Deighton – Mirfield – Ravensthorpe – Dewsbury – Wakefield Kirkgate
A bus replacement service will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 60 minutes.
Liverpool Lime Street – Lea Green – Newton-le-Willow – Manchester Victoria (Sunday 20 April only)
A bus replacement service will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 95 minutes.
There will be no trains between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street
Rail replacement buses will be in operation between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street calling at Newton-Le-Willows and Lea Green.
Buses will replace trains between Warrington Central and Liverpool Lime Street.
TransPennine Express services between Manchester Oxford Road and Liverpool Lime Street will start/terminate at Warrington Central.
Customers will need to change at Manchester Oxford Road for onward connections towards Stockport and Cleethorpes.
Buses will replace train services between Carlisle and Glasgow Central (calling at Lockerbie and Motherwell) as well as between Carlisle and Edinburgh (calling at Lockerbie).
Buses will replace trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria
TransPennine Express services between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle/Hull will be amended.
Customers will need to change at Manchester Victoria for onward connections towards Redcar Central and Newcastle.
Transpennine Route Upgrade work will affect services through Huddersfield. Train services will not be calling at Huddersfield and will be diverted. Services may be running to an amended timetable or replaced with a bus service, meaning journey time may be extended. Further details on the changes to services can be found below.
RAIL SERVICES
Liverpool Lime Street – Newcastle.
This service will use a diversionary route increasing journey times and running to an amended timetable. Services will not call at Huddersfield but will call additionally at Lea Green and Brighouse; a bus replacement service will be in operation for travel between Brighouse and Huddersfield (see details below).
Manchester Airport - Redcar Central
This service will start/terminate at Manchester Victoria and will use a diversionary route increasing journey times and running to an amended timetable. This service will not be calling at Huddersfield but will be calling additionally at Brighouse; a bus replacement service will be in place for travel between Huddersfield and Brighouse (see details below). This service will additionally stop at Morley and Batley every two hours.
Liverpool Lime Street – Hull
This service will only run between Leeds and Hull. Change at Leeds for onward travel.
Manchester Victoria - Scarborough
This service will only run between York and Scarborough. Change at York for onward travel.
Leeds - Huddersfield (local stopping, every two hours)
This service will not run. Customers should travel on Northern services between Leeds – Halifax via Dewsbury.
Manchester Piccadilly - York via Wakefield Kirkgate: This service will be split and run between Manchester - Stalybridge (hourly), along with Wakefield Kirkgate - York via Castleford (hourly).
BUS SERVICES
Huddersfield – Stockport – Manchester Airport
A bus replacement will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 80 minutes.
Huddersfield – Stalybridge
A bus replacement will be running express in both directions, up to every 30 minutes. Estimated total journey time: 50 minutes.
Huddersfield – Slaithwaite – Marsden – Greenfield – Mossley - Stalybridge
A bus replacement service will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 65 minutes.
Huddersfield – Brighouse (extends to Halifax hourly)
A bus replacement service will be running every 15 minutes in both directions with one service an hour extending through to Halifax. Estimated total journey time: 35 minutes.
Huddersfield – Deighton – Mirfield – Dewsbury – Wakefield Kirkgate
A bus replacement service will be running hourly in both directions. Estimated total journey time: 60 minutes
Buses will replace trains between Saltburn/Redcar Central and Middlesbrough
Customers will need to change at Middlesbrough for onward connections towards York and Darlington.
TransPennine Express will operate the following services:

TransPennine Express services will also be impacted by Transpennine Route Upgrade works between Leeds and Manchester. Amended timetables will be in operation.
