Incredibly, you can find attractions right on your doorstep when you start looking, so to help you out, we’ve rounded up just a few of our favourite day trips from Sheffield by train.

    Stockport is a town that beautifully blends its Victorian heritage with a lively cultural scene. The iconic Stockport Viaduct and the historic Market Hall are just the beginning. Explore the intriguing Stockport Air Raid Shelters for a glimpse into wartime Britain or enjoy a show at the Plaza Theatre – a stunning Art Deco venue that feels like stepping back into a bygone era. With craft beer breweries, independent bakeries and plenty of unique boutiques, Stockport is a delightful day trip destination.

    For a day trip from Sheffield by train filled with dark history, stunning architecture and tasty treats, York is top of the list. Famed for its traditional tea rooms, be sure to stop for a tea and cake break during your day out – we’d recommend trying a Fat Rascal (Betty’s does a particularly good one!). For those intrigued by the supernatural, York's many ghost tours provide a thrilling glimpse into its spooky past, whilst those with a passion for history will enjoy the many historic attractions the city has to offer.

  5. Dore: Wild moors, industrial history and panoramic views

    Why go?

    If you’re looking for a break from the buzz of Sheffield and fancy a bit of rural recreation, then Dore is for you. Its name comes from the fact that it was a gateway (door) between the neighbouring Deria and Mercia Anglo-Saxon kingdoms – so this sweet village comes with plenty of history. The main activities for visitors to Dore are walking and staring in wonder, mostly because it’s right on the edge of the beautiful Peak District. So, it’s well worth getting hold of the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL1 map and planning some weekend treks.

    • Blacka Moor Nature Reserve: Admire the rugged and wild landscape of this fantastic reserve.
    • Houndkirk Moor: Lace up your hiking boots and set off on an exhilarating trek across the moor.
    • Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet: Try your hand at traditional crafts and learn about the region’s industrial past.

Whether you’re looking to unwind or explore, Cleethorpes has something for everyone.

    • Cleethorpes Beach: Stroll along the sand or set your towel out for a day in the sun (weather permitting!).
    • Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway: Enjoy a scenic ride on this historic narrow-gauge railway.
    • Cleethorpes Country Park: Explore the park’s trails and enjoy birdwatching in a tranquil setting.

    World-class food, street art, independent shops and culture in spades: Manchester makes for a fantastic day trip from Sheffield. Start your day with a short walk from Piccadilly Station into the eclectic Northern Quarter, where you’ll find record stores, vintage shops and brunch spots galore. For art aficionados, head to one of the city’s many galleries – the Whitworth is a favourite of ours, and for the football fans among you, a visit to the Football Museum is essential.

    • New Islington Marina: Amble along the canal and purchase sweet treats from one of the local bakeries – Pollen, Companio and the Flat Baker should all be on your agenda.
    • Museum of Illusions: Experience a visual and sensory sensation at Manchester’s newest attraction.
    • Manchester Art Gallery: Take in the beauty of this Victorian building and the masterpieces it holds.



  11. Leeds: Art, architecture and indie shopping

    A vibrant city packed full of things to do; Leeds is a great day out from Sheffield. For a cultural fix, check out Leeds Art Gallery or the Royal Armouries Museum, or head out of town to Roundhay Park for beautiful parkland and serene lakes.

    Scunthorpe is surrounded by lots of great attractions, and the North Lincolnshire town also has some brilliant things to see right in the centre. One of our favourites is the Steelworks Railtour, which features some pretty amazing trains (that you don’t need to be a rail enthusiast to appreciate!). These weekend tours give you a great glimpse into the industrial heritage of the town and take place just a 20-minute stroll from the station. Make sure you book tickets in advance!

    Must-do activities:

    • North Lincolnshire Museum: Discover the town’s industrial past and local history.
    • Normanby Hall Country Park: Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the stunning woodland.
    • Messingham Zoo: Get up close and personal with adorable animals at this family-run sanctuary.



  15. Doncaster: Racing, minsters and Georgian architecture

    Why go?

    Currently holding the crown as Yorkshire’s newest city (as made official by King Charles in 2022), Doncaster has a lot to offer. From its impressive racecourse to the fascinating Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, there's plenty to explore. Doncaster Minster is well worth a visit to admire the beautiful architecture, discover its fiery history and, if you time it right, get a chance to hear the amazing Schulze Organ come to life. One of Doncaster’s newest additions the Danum Gallery Library and Museum, should also be on your radar. It has an impressive selection of art and history on display and immersive exhibitions to entertain the whole family.

    • Yorkshire Wildlife Park: Embark on a wild adventure and get up close with animals from around the world.
