Named Europe’s most haunted city, it is little wonder that many people flock to York to explore the city of shadows, spells and spirits.
When you think of York, you probably think of the The Shambles, the street that inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films. But, as visitors to York quickly find out, this is a city that’s happy to embrace spirits, spells and shadows all year round. Here’s a few ideas for how you can make the most of Haunted York.
A great way to get your bearings around the city is with a walking tour, and there are many to choose from, including national tourism award winners. Younger visitors will love the Wizard Tours of York, promising a magical experience for all.
If you prefer something a bit more gruesome, you’ll love the tales told by Mad Alice on The Bloody Tour of York as she uncovers York’s bloody history hidden in the shadows.
Dorian Deathly delves into the paranormal with sophisticated flair, whilst the York Witch Tour shines a light on the real-life witches of York – and there are plenty more besides! Don’t fancy walking? Don’t worry – there’s a Ghost Bus Tour (say it fast, and you’ll get the joke – who ya gonna call?).
If you had planned more of an indoor trip (or if the weather’s looking particularly autumnal), you don’t want to miss a visit to the award-winning York Dungeon. Expect shockingly entertaining performances by talented actors full of jump scares, special effects and audience participation.
Or, for something a bit more relaxed, pop in The Hole In Wand for wizard-themed crazy golf, or Potions Cauldron to make your own magical brew.
And even if you just fancy a relaxing meander around the streets, snickleways and gardens of York, we can guarantee that you’ll see a ghost or two, thanks to York BID’s Ghosts in the Garden, a free trail of ghostly sculptures around the city throughout October, with a special illuminated experience premiering this year – book your tickets now!
Sufficiently spooked? Plan your trip at York’s haunted hub. You can travel to York on a direct TransPennine Express train from major cities such as Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds. Buy your ticket online or via our app now.
