As a rail operator that serves both the North of England and Scotland, it’s vital we offer a service that provides great links between communities. Where possible, we always look to find further opportunities to connect even more communities by rail.
Across our network there have been a number of initiatives and celebrations of our colleagues and the services we look to offer. Take a look at what’s been happening during the past six months.
TPE celebrated the 175th anniversary of Hull Paragon Interchange with the completion of a mural that will transform the Ferensway entrance of the historic building.
In November 2023, TPE commissioned Hull-based artist, Andy Pea, who, in collaboration with students of Ron Dearing UTC and with ideas from the users of the Interchange and wider public, has created a vibrant public art piece that will serve as a visual chronicle of Hull's history.
Andy, a practising artist for more than 25 years said: “I’m so proud to be a part of these historic celebrations with TPE and I’m delighted to unveil the finished mural to the people of Hull.
“The ‘Creation of Hull’ artwork aims to enrich the urban landscape, proving that when a community comes together to create, the city flourishes as a canvas for collective expression.”
The artwork provides a kaleidoscope of Hull’s history and culture across four walls and the ceiling of the station entrance with the existing memorial boards in this area will remain and have been sympathetically incorporated into the mural design.
Hull Paragon users can now see ‘The Creation of Hull’ revealing five chapters on the each of the four walls and ceiling. Those chapters are:
East wall: A tribute to Kingston-Upon-Hull's deep-rooted connection to the sea and its rich maritime heritage.
South wall: Framed by the Humber Bridge against the backdrop of the estuary, seamlessly fusing the themes of trade and nature.
West wall: A tribute to the vibrant life of Paragon station, a gateway reverberating with echoes of journeys embarked upon and human experiences.
North wall: Representing Hull's legacy of innovation, through a woven tapestry of inspiration, celebrating the city's trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on the world.
Ceiling: An imaginative reinterpretation of Michelangelo's iconic masterpiece 'The Creation of Adam', forming the centrepiece of 'The Creation of Hull' artwork.
TPE engineer celebrates 40 years in the rail industry
In November 2023, after an impressive 40 years in the railway industry, David Walker, the Head of Fleet Commercial at TPE celebrated with colleagues and friends who congratulated him on this remarkable milestone.
As a token of their appreciation, long-time friends at TPE presented David with a special commemorative gift, hotel stay, and thanks for his service.
David said: “I’ve had a wonderful 40 years of working in the railway and have no intention of stopping any time soon.
“I just want to say how grateful I am to everyone I’ve worked with over the years, and I was taken aback by the kindness of my friends and colleagues during the presentation.”
Scotland TPE gave ‘Hailes Castle’ train a Scottish welcome at the opening of East Linton station TPE renamed its first service to stop at East Linton train station, ‘Hailes Castle’, giving the train a true Scottish welcome.
In December 2023, highland dancers and a Scottish piper serenaded the inaugural TPE service as East Linton train station welcomed trains into its platforms for the first time in almost 60 years.
To mark the historic opening, TPE renamed its first service to stop at the station, ‘Hailes Castle’, after the ruin of the nearby fortified manor dating back to the 1200s, associated with the Wars of Independence and Mary Queen of Scots.
TPE operates up to 14 services a day to East Linton station. From Monday to Friday, 11 services between Edinburgh and Newcastle will stop at the station, while on Saturdays there are 14 services and nine on Sundays.

In December, the opening of the second platform at Castleford railway station now allows TPE to run services between York – Castleford – Wakefield Kirkgate – Huddersfield – Manchester Piccadilly.
This was the first time since 1970 that the communities of Castleford and York have been connected with a daily direct service, made possible by the recently completed works from the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).
In addition to this, Wakefield has its first daily direct service to Manchester since 2004, and Normanton also has direct connections to both Manchester and York.
