Thanks to its eclectic architecture, the Northern Quarter has established itself as a firm favourite for film and TV producers looking for suitable backdrops to transport their characters and viewers into different centuries, cities, countries and continents.

Walking further along Dale Street, you’ll pass the entrance to Little Lever Street. As well as 1940s Brooklyn for Captain America: The First Avenger and 1920s Birmingham for Peaky Blinders, Little Lever Street in Manchester has also been transformed into Victorian London for Guy Ritchie’s reinvention of Sherlock Holmes. Starring Robert Downey Jr as the famous detective, Rachel McAdams as his on-screen sweetheart, and Jude Law as his sidekick Dr Watson, the 2009 film was shot in a number of locations around the Northern Quarter – including Little Lever Street.

The famous actors and wider cast can be seen in the film walking down Little Lever Street dressed in authentic looking Victorian garments as they act out the story of the eccentric detective – who was originally created by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – and his bid to save the British Empire.

A short walk further down Dale Street, and you’ll arrive on the corner of Lever Street. Jude Law previously visited the Northern Quarter a few years’ earlier in 2004 for the filming of Alfie on Lever Street – a remake of the 1966 movie of the same name. But this time, the streets doubled for the Big Apple.

Across the road you’ll find Chapter One, a popular bookshop and café which was also used during filming for the first episode of Cold Feet Season 7.
