Situated in the New Town district of Edinburgh, Broughton Place is near to many popular attractions

It’s appeared on screen during a multi Oscar winning film about two athletes competing in the 1924 Olympics – Chariots of Fire

The location has also been reimagined in a French animation

Located not too far from the Edinburgh Playhouse and Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Broughton Place is in the New Town district of Edinburgh. As well as positioned close to popular bars and restaurants, the homes and hotels on this Georgian Street have also appeared in a number of films over the years.

Scenes from the 1981 film Chariots of Fire – which won several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay – were also shot here. West Sands in Scotland’s St Andrews was also used as a location for the film’s beach scenes.

Directed by Hugh Hudson, Chariots of Fire tells the story of two young British sprinters – Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, played by Ian Charleson and Ben Cross – competing in the 1924 Olympics.

French director Sylvain Chomet’s animated film L'illusionniste was also set, in part, here in Broughton Place. Edinburgh’s starring role in the movie is thanks to the director’s love of the city – he reportedly changed the location from Prague to the Scottish capital.

The animation follows the story of an illusionist who travels Scotland and meets a young woman. Other places in the city that were illustrated for the film include Edinburgh Waverley Station and Arthur’s Seat.
