We’re an inclusive lot up North and nowhere is that better exemplified than by the vast array of gay Pride events that take place from Glasgow to Hebden Bridge, and Hull to Liverpool. So grab your glitter and get ready for a quick rundown of the Pride events taking place across our network.
Manchester Pride is a 4-day do which sees the Gay Village area around Canal Street transform into the epicentre of the city with great events taking place all over. The event is divided into 4 parts…
24-27 August
Music and entertainment are the key here in a massive festival taking place across the Gay Village. This is a huge carnival with this year Pete Tong, Rita Ora, Jakes Shears and many more.
25 August
For many, The Parade is the centre of the whole weekend, and this year it offers all the thrills and spills of the big top as the theme is The Circus of Acceptance. Think people dressed as stilt walkers and unicyclists, jugglers and trapeze artists. Entries for the Parade are closed now but expect the whole of Manchester to be out and proud and cheering from the ringside.
24-27 August
The Superbia Weekend is a free partner festival. It takes place at the site of the old Cornerhouse (70 Oxford Road). The event’s aim is to bring people together with debate, film, comedy, literature, music, sport, theatre, family- and community-led projects.
27 August
Under the watchful eye of the Alan Turing sculpture in Sackville Gardens comes the weekend’s most touching event. The vigil turns the space into a shimmering sea of lights, which is also a time to remember lost loved ones and also recognising the challenges that many LGBT+ communities around the world, as well as some in the UK, still suffer.
The second-biggest Pride event in the UK, Newcastle Pride is a must-experience event. After years as little more than a picnic-style get together, the event has now evolved into a huge parade through the centre of the city and a fantastic party taking place at Nuns Moor Park (with more events taking place all over the city). Head here for Saturday headliner Alexandra Burke, Sunday headliners S Club, Pop Idol's Gareth Gates and Britain’s Got Talent star Jamie Lee Harrison.
Starting at midday with a Parade taking you from Hull College to a party in Queen’s Gardens, Pride In Hull promises to be a fun, family-friendly celebration full of entertainment, some stand-out street food and a headline performance by Girls Aloud’s Nadine Coyne.
Liverpool Pride’s motto is ‘Be Loud & Be Proud’ and we happily subscribe to that as a life goal. This year’s Pride is also using the hashtag #Alltogethernow to represent the inclusive nature of the event – so whoever you are, so long as you’ve got some love in your heart, you’re welcomed with open arms. The event boasts the march as well as a whole host of great cultural events, live music, films and performances across the city.
With a Parade full of floats and a stage packed with performers, Sheffield Pride always promises a fun day out for all.
Yorkshire’s biggest Pride event promises a ton of fun from the Pride Parade full of floats and open top buses through to a great event at Lower Briggate. Lots of performances are promised including the UK’s 2018 Eurovision entrant SuRie.
Hebden Bridge is a brilliant place to visit at any time of year, but rocking up when the whole town is undergoing a festival of love and inclusivity sounds like a great idea to us. There’s an outdoor stage with live bands, a special night at The Picture House and even a Dog Show.
Here are a few events that you might want to consider for next year because they’ve already happened in 2018.
